This tune, from the Simon Fraser Collection published in 1816 refers to the thoughts of the fugitive "Bonnie Prince Charlie" on the night after his defeat at Culloden. Simon Fraser's mother and her sister, then little girls, were whispering to each other in the room next door to the Prince, loudly enough for him to suspect that he was about to be betrayed. On discovering the source of the voices he is said to have exclaimed "Hard is My Fate, when the innocent prattle of children could annoy me so much."
