Miss Maxwell 02:16

This collection of fiddle music from Scotland in the 18th and 19th Centuries was recorded back in 2002. After 20 years, I'm pleased to be able to make it available as a digital download. It was recorded in a community hall close to where I live in the Scottish Borders. The idea of fiddle and cello playing together is not new, having been at one time the most popular line up for Dances and Balls throughout the country. Notable past pairings on fiddle and cello have included Niel and Donald Gow & Peter Milne and a young James Scott Skinner. The cello parts on this album are not the same as the bass parts you might find on some of the older collections of printed music but have been newly invented as part of the creative process.

released January 3, 2023

Recorded in the Glen Douglas Community Hall, Jedburgh, Scotland January 2002. Recording assistance by Steve Moffat. Edited and mixed by Peter Haigh, Pier House Studios, Edinburgh. Cover photography by Shannon Tofts. Cover design by Brilliant White Design.

Iain Fraser is fascinated by the fiddle’s rhythmic and emotional capabilities and draws his material from 18th Century Scottish tunes to new self-penned compositions and from the multiple regional music styles of the British Isles to those of North America and Europe.
